Acute and Chronic Symptoms

While conventional medicine treats conditions and everyone with a certain diagnosis receives the same or a similar drug, homeopathy works differently.

Rather than treating a condition, it treats the person. The goal is to understand the specific imbalances showing up in that individual and match a remedy to their unique symptom picture and then allow the body’s natural healing power to move towards greater balance and health.

This is why two people with the same diagnosis will often receive completely different remedies — because they express their imbalance differently.

An important part of building that symptom picture is understanding the difference between acute and chronic symptoms and why it matters in homeopathic prescribing.

ACUTE SYMPTOMS

  • Clear trigger: a virus, bacteria or physical injure

  • Appear Suddenly

  • Intense but short-lived

  • The immune system  generally knows what to do

CHRONIC SYMPTOMS

  • No obvious triggers, often linked to emotional traumas, genetic tendencies,  life style and environment exposures

  • Develop slowly, often sitting quietly in the background for a long time before becoming noticeable

  • Complex, with several layers and long standing

  • The immune system is kept in a low level of activation not necessarily managing to fully deal with the symptoms

Now I want to introduce you to the ACUTE OF A CHRONIC CONDITIONS. This  is where it can get a little confusing — but to be honest it is quite simple as far as you understood the difference between acute and chronic symptoms.

This happens when there is a chronic condition quietly sitting in the background and then suddenly it flares up with intense, acute-like symptoms. The same principle applies as with any acute: suddenly, intense and short-lived but instead of sorting it out  the body will generally bring things back to the previous baseline which still carries the original imbalance, so it will return because the root cause hasn't been dealt with.

Hay fever is a good example. Every spring or summer, the symptoms flare — sneezing, itchy eyes, sinus irritation. You can prescribe a remedy to ease the intensity and support the body through it. You can also do nothing, and it will likely settle once pollen levels drop. But next season, it  generally comes back.

HOW TO PRESCRIBE

PRESCRIBING FOR ACUTE CONDITIONS

  • Based on the totality of symptoms of the current complaint

  • Short-term support to help the body restore its own balance

  • May need a sequence of acute remedies as one symptom disappear, but other might surface

  • Herbal balms, tinctures and teas, as well as “grandma’s recipes” might be prescribe alongside it

  • Totally curable -  it comes down to how well your body can access its own healing capacity

PRESCRIBING FOR CHRONIC CONDITIONS

  • It is a much deeper treatment based on the person as a whole - physically, mentally and emotionally as well as on family history and susceptibility

  • Long term treatment focus on peeling the layers of imbalances till reach the core of the case

  • Need a sequence of constitutional remedy capable of peels the layers and give space for the next layer to surface

  • Organ support remedies, Herbs, Supplements, Nutritional changes might be used along side it

  • Cure is not always possible, but they can be understood, managed, and often significantly improved

PRESCRIBING FOR ACUTE OF A CHRONIC CONDITIONS

Treat the case as if it were an acute condition, prescribing a remedy based on the totality of the current symptoms. The aim is to relieve discomfort and support the body's return to its baseline.

Once the acute symptoms have settled, treatment can then progress to a chronic prescription, focusing on the underlying root cause that created the imbalance in the first place. This process involves gently peeling back the layers that have accumulated over the years, allowing the body to heal at a deeper level.

True healing takes time, patience, and careful observation. But it is within this process that the possibility of real, lasting change exists.

HOME PRESCRIBING AND WHEN TO SEEK PROFESSIONAL HELP

Acute issues can often be managed at home with the right guidance.

For ongoing or complex symptoms, working with a trained homeopath is usually the better path. Finding the right remedy takes time — each consultation builds a clearer picture of the person's overall state, and some contributing factors are subtle or longstanding.
